LIFE: 2020 Word of the Year

Wowzers! So I began thinking of the my word of the year probably mid- December and realized at that point that I did not even know what word I had chosen for 2019. So a quick search of the old blog lead me to the word DISCOVER! and Yes! 2019 was a year of discovery.

When I wrote DISCOVER for 2019, I didn't know:

  • I would get to explore a little more of the area I had relocated to in 2018, and expand the border to Washington DC before...
  • Getting to explore airports during the first two months of 2019 ...
  • While interviewing for the opportunity to move closer to "home".
These three bullet points were the centerfold for the first quarter of 2019. We had planned a trip to Texas for our sons first birthday, and got approached to start a conversation with a church in the state. We made that trip an epic road trip of Texas and celebrated our little guy turing one with family. Arriving back in Virginia we were still a little upside down on what God was calling us to do. We love our FBC Woodstock family, but there for sure was a pull to Texas as Home.

Conversations continued with the church that we flew out to see, but another church knocked on our door and we were honest about where we were. Little did we know that a second trip to the first church would be amazing, but ultimately lead us to the church we knew little about and a little closer to home. We even scared the second church by talking about how amazing the second trip was to the first church- haha! We made the hard journey away from our "family" in Woodstock, and journeyed to South Texas where we get to serve a community about 45 minutes away from where we grew up. We are smitten and beyond grateful for the journey that lead us here.

The next two quarters of 2019 were spent settling into life in our "new city"( I say it that way because we technically live in the same city we were both born and raised in but are doing life in a small country community outside of the city).
  • Took Malachi to his second church summer camp, second Vacation Bible School, and first Disciple Now Weekend
  • Explored with our niece from Alaska all the things her mom and I enjoyed doing as kid including Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Doseum (kids museum), and swimming everyday
  • Took Malachi and Kloey (niece) to the ocean for their first time
  • Introduced Malachi to all of our favorite restaurants and snack spots: Ruthies, Bill Millers, HEB and Central Market samples, Quick Snak #2 ( if you know, you know)
  • We have picked up the exploration bug and have started walking the Mission Trail
  • Gained some new "family" through our new church
  • Mama got to join the Alamo City Moms event team
Discovery was for sure the best word I could have placed on my board for 2019, and I didn't even remember it because I was too busy doing it. Weirdly it kept coming to mind looking at my 2020 docket too but I think I have decided that I am going to leave a little more margin to my discovering this year and make my word:

Defined by Merriam-Webster:
1   a: to investigate, study, or analyze : look into explore the relationship between social class and learning ability—sometimes used with indirect questions to explore where ethical issues arise— R. T. Blackburn          b: to become familiar with by testing or experimenting explore new cuisines

2: to travel over (new territory) for adventure or discovery

The three of us have enjoyed dropping everything and going on walks, and many more are to come in 2020. I will also get the opportunity to journey to Africa, learn more about Adoption at the Christian Alliance for Orphans conference, attend summer camp with our student ministry, and many more adventures that have yet to be planned at this time. Explore also works for M as he is starting to look at the toys and items we deal with on a daily basis and learn what they actually do, and trying new foods.  I have had a new opportunity for work which will allow me to take my work on my explorations, which pleases me very much and for sure was God given.

From discover to explore, lets keep going 2020

LIFE: Camp

I have had an awful lot of un published blogs lately. These blogs come from deep routed feelings that have surfaced this year due to one thing or another. Maybe some day these blogs will be unearthed but for today, this blog needed to be written while it was still raw.  I have very vague memories of third or forth grade summer camp at Alto Frio, where I met Nana Pudding ( a christian puppet) and went pogging for the first time in a river. Summer after sixth grade,  I got in church vans and headed to Louisiana for the first time to attend Student Life Camp, then proceeded to go to Angelo State University and Glorieta New Mexico a few times. I spent time serving during spring breaks at Riverbend Retreat Center which lead to an internship over the summer. The week that "Curtis" and I first really got to know each other, we were at Glorieta for Centrifuge camp.  Camp is a special place for me. Camp is a happy place for me.  In 2018, I was able to experience camp through new eyes

LIFE: Processing the Unknown

In the 90's, television and books portrayed the family with 2.5 children and a house with a two car garage where dad worked outside of the home and mom had dinner ready in the evenings. The show would continue with grandma and grandpa popping in for a visit or a trip to their house.  My 90's family did not have this imagery- and that's okay. I grew up with divorced parents, and the parents I lived with full time both were from countries other than the US- meaning aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents all still lived in their respective native land. This meant that I did not necessarily have the same visitation schedule as families who all live in the same city, state, or country.  I know from pictures that the first time that my Nana ( my dads mom) Sheila, from England, came to visit was the spring after I was born. I have pictures of myself in a stroller with my Nana below the Tower of Americas. The next time I would get the opportunity to be with my grandmother was arou

REVIEW: You Can Do This by Tricia Lott Williford

Tricia and her book baby {necessary information} I received this book from the author as a part of the launch team for free. The opinions expressed in this blog are mine alone and not those of the author or publisher. {review: You Can Do This } Tricia is a clear and concise writer detailing some hurtful and raw points in her life. Through every chapter there is a reflection assignment to help you work through the tough spots in your life and find the confidence in Him to work through them. She sprinkles quotes from strong famous people, as well as strong Biblical truths. In chapter 5 she reminds you that the comment section does not have the right to get you down. On page 62, Tricias therapist reminds us that, " Everybody has a chapter of their life they don't read out loud." She introduced me to 6 word stories- which I am very excited to give a try. In chapter 9 she introduces us to her second love story. "No for now isn't no forever"!!!! Every cha
